“We’ll get you ranking on google.ae.”
If an agency said that to you recently, they are describing a version of Google that no longer exists. And it is worth knowing that before you pay them for it.
Google began retiring country-specific domains in April 2025. google.ae, google.co.uk, google.co.in and the rest now redirect to a single google.com. Search results are tailored by where you physically are, not by which address you typed into the bar.
That change quietly invalidated a lot of advice still circulating in the UAE market. So here is what genuinely decides whether a customer in Dubai, Sharjah or Abu Dhabi finds your business, and how to check it properly instead of fooling yourself.
What Happened to google.ae
Google Retired Country Domains in 2025
The rollout started on 15 April 2025 and moved everyone onto one domain. Google’s reasoning was that country-level domains had become unnecessary, because location can now be determined accurately from IP address and device settings without needing a separate address for each country.
In practice, typing google.ae simply lands you on google.com, with results shaped by where you actually are.
Why This Confuses So Many UAE Businesses
For years, checking google.ae versus google.com felt like a meaningful test. It never told you as much as people assumed, and now it tells you nothing at all about the domain.
The confusion persists because the underlying observation was real. Results genuinely do differ depending on where you search from. People simply attributed it to the wrong cause. The domain change did not alter how localisation works, it just removed a misleading signal people were using to test it.
There is a practical consequence worth knowing. If your reporting, rank tracking or agency dashboards were configured around google.ae, those numbers were measuring something slightly different from what you assumed even before the change. Anything still framed that way is worth a second look.
The good news is that nothing you should have been doing has changed. Businesses that invested in genuine local relevance were never depending on the domain. Only the shorthand disappeared.
So What Decides If UAE Customers See You?
Direct answer: physical location first, then personalisation, then proximity within the city itself.
Physical Location Beats Everything
Google works out where the searcher is and serves results for that place. Someone searching from Dubai gets Dubai-weighted results whether they type google.com, google.ae, or use the app.
This is why a VPN test is unreliable and why asking a friend overseas to “check if I rank” produces meaningless answers. They are getting results for their location, not your customer’s.
Your Search History Is Lying to You
This is the biggest self-deception in local SEO. Google tailors results using your IP, device, and search history, and you have searched your own business name dozens or hundreds of times.
Google has learned you want that result. It obliges. Your customer, with no such history, sees something else entirely.
If your own searches are your evidence that everything is fine, you have no evidence at all.
This cuts the other way too. Business owners sometimes panic because they cannot find themselves on a colleague’s phone, when the profile is performing perfectly well for the customers who matter. Both the false comfort and the false alarm come from the same mistake: treating a personalised result as a measurement.
Proximity Within Dubai Itself
Location does not stop at the country. For local searches, distance between the searcher and your business changes results within a single city.
A customer in Deira and a customer in Marina searching the same phrase can see different businesses ranked in a different order. Neither result is wrong. This matters enormously if you serve the whole emirate but only have one address.
It also explains a frustration many UAE businesses share: you rank well near your office and disappear across town. That is not a fault in your SEO. It is proximity working exactly as designed, and the honest fix is either more locations, or content and profile signals strong enough that relevance outweighs distance.
How Do You Check Your Real UAE Rankings?
Direct answer: not by searching and looking, which is what almost everyone does.
Incognito Is Not Enough
Incognito mode removes your search history but not your location or IP address. It is better than a normal search and still not a clean test.
Free Ways to Check Properly
Google Search Console is the most honest source you have. It reports actual impressions, clicks and average position from real searchers, filterable by country, so you can see UAE performance specifically rather than guessing from your own screen.
Set the country filter to United Arab Emirates and look at the queries report. It will show you terms you never thought to check and, more usefully, terms where you appear often but nobody clicks. High impressions with a low click rate usually means your title and description are not doing their job, which is a far cheaper fix than chasing rankings.
For spot checks of what a searcher elsewhere sees, there are reliable methods for viewing results for a specific location using search parameters or browser location settings rather than a VPN.
If you have not established what your numbers look like before making changes, that is worth fixing first. Our guide to running an SEO baseline audit covers what to record and why it matters.
The Signals That Genuinely Affect UAE Visibility
Google Business Profile and Local Signals
For anything with local intent, your Google Business Profile does more heavy lifting than your website. Categories, completeness, reviews and consistent contact details across the web all feed local visibility.
Our local SEO tips for Dubai businesses goes deeper on the profile side.
Hosting Location and .ae Domains: Do They Matter?
Mildly, and less than people think. Google’s own guidance on multi-regional sites notes that with a generic domain like .com you can signal geographic targeting through other means, so a country domain is not a requirement.
A .ae domain carries a small trust and relevance signal, and local hosting can help page speed for nearby users. Neither will rescue a site that has no local content, no profile and no local links. If you already have an established .com with history, switching domains for this reason alone is rarely worth the risk.
Content That Reads as Genuinely Local
Naming emirates, areas and local specifics matters, as long as it is real. A page that mentions Dubai forty times without saying anything Dubai-specific fools nobody, least of all Google.
Genuine local content answers questions only a local would ask: which areas you serve, how UAE regulations affect the work, what things actually cost here.
Local links work the same way. A mention from a UAE business directory, a local chamber, a supplier or an event you sponsored carries more weight for local visibility than a generic international link. They are harder to acquire and they are also harder for a competitor to copy.
When an Agency Says “We’ll Rank You on google.ae”
What That Tells You About Them
It is not automatically a scam. Plenty of decent people use outdated shorthand because clients recognise the phrase.
But it is worth one follow-up question: ask what they mean by it now that the domain redirects. A good answer talks about location signals, Google Business Profile and local relevance. A bad answer repeats the phrase more confidently.
That single question separates people who track how search actually works from people repeating a script. If you want a fuller checklist, our guide on choosing an SEO agency in Dubai covers what else to ask.
The Bottom Line
google.ae is gone, and it was never the thing deciding your visibility anyway. Location, personalisation and proximity were always doing that work.
Stop measuring your rankings by searching for yourself. Open Search Console, filter to the UAE, and look at what real people actually saw and clicked. It is less flattering and considerably more useful.
If you want to know how you genuinely perform for UAE customers rather than for yourself, our SEO services for Dubai businesses start with exactly that measurement. Talk to us and we will show you the real numbers.
The most dangerous ranking report is the one you generate by Googling yourself.
